GOLFING

Golf at The Angel Fire Country Club
Rise above the ordinary at the Angel Fire Resort Golf Course and Country Club. The longer-playing layouts of the front nine wind through two unspoiled canyons of aspen and spruce. The signature 6th hole features a tee box soaring 200 vertical feet above the green – 250 yards away. The back nine offers mountain meadow style play with rolling fairways, meandering streams and plenty of bunkers to challenge every level of golfer.
The Angel Fire Resort Golf Course is open the first of May through mid-October.

The signature hole at the Angel Fire Resort Golf & Country Club, the 6th hole is a 216-yard, par 3 with the tee box a spectacular 200 feet above the green. Bunkers on left and right frame the green against the aspen, fir and ponderosa pines. Wind will play a part in your club selection. Some days call for a 3-iron, other days an eight-iron. Amazing 360-degree views of Wheeler Peak and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains make this hole the most memorable on the course.

PRO TIP: Plenty of room right to avoid trouble left. Downhill drop will reduce club selection 2-3 clubs.

The second hardest hole on the course will test even the most seasoned player at the end of a great round of golf. At 487 yards, the 18th hole is the only par 5 on the back nine and always seems to play much longer. Between you and the fairway lie a creek, native grassland, and a road. You’ll need at least 200 yards to carry your drive over the road to the large landing area. Your tee shot should be placed to the left side of the fairway to give you better position to hit your 2nd shot up a chute between tall pines and fir trees. Deep bunkers in front and back and ridge running through the middle guard the elevated green. Pin position on this two-tiered green will play a role in your score.

PRO TIP: For a clear approach shot, favor the left side of the fairway on your second shot.

If you need additional information regarding golf at the Angel Fire Country Club, give me a call and I will do my best to answer your questions. I spend a few hours golfing at the Country Club, am a board member of the Angel Fire Men’s Golf Association and Chairperson of the Angel Fire Resort Golf Advisory Committee so at least my answers will have a little research associated with them.

  1. It’s too cold and white to golf in Angel Fire, let alone that the golf course is closed. We can still get our golfing fix by traveling a few miles south. How many miles depends on the temperatures and snow fall. Taos Country Club, Towa Golf Course and Black Mesa between Espanola and Santa Fe are open year round and closed only if weather doesn’t permit play. Sometimes we have to go all the way to Albuquerque to play, but that isn’t too much of a sacrifice for a true golfer. I played at Desert Greens in Albuquerque at the end of December. It is a nice traditional style course. Also, if you haven’t heard, Angel Fire Resort established a partnership with Santa Clara Pueblo that owns Black Mesa Golf Course, and members of Angel Fire Resort can play there anytime for $40. Black Mesa is in the top 25 “Courses you can Play” as ranked by Golf Digest. Have a great winter and be sure to get in some golf.
