Slow Economy? Angel Fire

Invests Over 50 Million Dollars!

Over 50 million dollars was invested in Angel Fire this summer. Angel Fire Resort invested over $20M in the new Country Club, remodeling The Lodge at Angel Fire and resort infrastructure projects. The Village of Angel Fire invested several million dollars in rebuilding North Angel Fire Road, rebuilding the crossing on South Angel Fire Road, two new fire trucks and a new million gallon water tank. Moreno Valley High School invested in their first bricks and mortar building, a multi-purpose facility. Property owners invested over $25M in the Public Improvement District bringing infrastructure to over 800 lots.

Read the newspapers; watch television and most of what you hear is bad news. Drive around Angel Fire; most of what you see and hear is progress with people and businesses putting their money into improving our resort village. If you don’t get excited about the possibilities of what is happening and will continue to happen in Angel Fire, then by all means, go back to reading the bad news.

There have been several developers in town this summer accompanied by their financial teams looking at the potential of development in Angel Fire. Plans have been on the back burner for several years and it looks as though they feel this might be the exact right time to dust them off and invest in our village.

Red ribbons have been falling all summer as we complete one project after another. Angel Fire Resort started the ball rolling with the opening of the magnificent Country Club facility in May that is touted as one of the nicest facilities in the state, if not the country.

The first subdivision of the PID was accepted by the village this fall and the remainder will be completed and accepted in the summer of 2011.

The Village of Angel Fire cut the ribbon on the improvements to North Angel Fire Road in October that used American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) dollars. The rebuilt road presents a grand entry to The Lodge, condominiums and businesses in that area.

Dignitaries were in town to cut the ribbon on the new million-gallon water tank that not only provides much needed water storage, but will aid in improving our ISO fire rating. The tank along with fire station two, a new ladder truck, a new wildland fire truck, fire fighter training and tree thinning will hopefully lower our ISO rating and lower insurance premiums for all Angel Fire residents and businesses. A grant for over $400,000 was provided to Angel Fire by ARRA to thin the forest as part of our fire mitigation plan adopted last year.

Additional investments were made in our village by businesses and individuals who built new homes, improved existing homes and business, started and expanded businesses and hired new employees.

Look around…investments were made, progress happened, it’s easy to get excited about the future of Angel Fire.

  2. WORK AT THE COLFAX COUNTY AIRPORT CONTINUES

Improvements at the Colfax County Angel Fire Airport continue this fall as part of the airport master plan.
Over the past year, the county has dumped lots of recourses into the high-altitude airport to make it more user friendly for aviators.
The latest project to be completed was a repair job to the apron at the facility.
³We completed work on the runway and apron repair,² Don Day, Colfax County Manager said. ³These projects were combined.² Day added there was also a crew on site making some finishing touches to the airport¹s much need game fence.
The cost of the runway and apron repair project was about $275,000. The total cost of the game fence was about $175,000 for the project.
³These are rough estimates from memory,² Day added.
The projects are part of the airport master plan, which, identifies and outlines improvements needed or wanted at the airport.
County officials are also taking steps to have aircraft hangars built at the Airport. Although still in the early stages, construction on the hangers isn¹t likely to began until late spring or summer 2011. Colfax County Commissioner Bill Conley says, the county still needs to figure out exactly were it would build the hangars and how many it would be willing to build.
Once the county gets everything in place, private owners would also have the option to build hangar space if they wish. Conley went on to say, any hangar built by a private contractor would have to conform to county specifications.
The addition of aircraft hangars, also part of a master plan, has been in demand by aircraft owners who want to keep their investment out of the elements. Additional hangar space would allow aircraft to be stored in a controlled environment and lessen the risk of damage to the aircraft in the case of a storm or other natural events.
³The runway portion of the project was brought up early due to need,² Day explained.
The game fence was needed due the large game animals that congregate around the airport, causing risk to the animals and to aircraft trying to land and the airport.
Another project on the long-term list for the airport improvements is the construction of a permanent fueling location on site. Currently, fuel trucks are brought in to refuel aircraft.
Colfax County Manager Don Day says nothing will happen too fast due to budgets and available money.

  3. Kathy, I assume you are referring to the PID improvments. Yes they will call for additional power lines (underground). The co-op that supplies our power is Kit Carson Electric. Please let us know if you have additional questions.

  4. Does this expansion call for additional power lines to be built? Which co-op supplies your power.
